The first registrations were allowed in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it are required to comply with certain rules. In other words, all .MOBI websites are required to be developed to be opened correctly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the .MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The requirements have induced some worries considering the fact that the top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to access a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be created in such a way as to be accessed by most web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
